Available Programs For Students on Long Island
We provide a wide range of school-based mental health services for children (and their parents) that are struggling with issues like school refusal, anxiety, ADHD, and more. Each service is here to help with student well-being, improve attendance, and make sure that your child has what they need to manage the needs of the classroom and their mental health.
Our School Avoidance Support Services
School avoidance and school refusal are especially common here on Long Island, though the causes of this refusal are complex and multifaceted. That is why we offer as part of our school services “School Avoidance Support Services” This program offers:
- Initial Assessment – Either through our team or through District Support Services, there is a comprehensive review and consultation that looks at a child’s student records (including IEPs, evaluations, attendance data, and behavioral documentation) along with interviews with the student, parents, caregivers, and school staff. We use this to gain a better understanding of your child and their needs.
- Psychotherapy – Once we have this information, your child will attend therapy with counselor or therapist that specializes in childhood mental health and school related issues. Sessions will take place multiple times a week. Depending on their age and where their struggles may be sourced, we could use evidence based therapies that include, but are not limited to, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Each approach is chosen collaboratively based on what makes the most sense for the child.
- Parent Coaching and Family Counseling – We know that sometimes, what the child needs starts with the parents getting what they need. We have parent coaching and family therapy that can be integrated into the process and support not only the individual children but the entire family unit.
- School Consultations – We will connect with school personnel both in person and virtually to make sure that there is collaborative feedback and guidance that supports all students with integration, comfort, and learning.
- Reintegration Support – Therapists will help the student feel comfortable in the classroom again, with various services like desensitization, behavioral rehearsal, on-site coaching and intervention, and more. Services can be as needed hourly or full day.
- Post-Program Coaching – Even after reintegration, Long Island Counseling will still be there to provide you with continued support when you or your child needs it most. We can also meet with teachers and school personnel to continue to reinforce and assess therapeutic strategies.
Your child’s academics are important. The issues that have led to school avoidance and school refusal can be addressed. With our school avoidance program, we will work to help your child get reintegrated into the school system and feeling good about the classroom again.
ADHD Support Services
Long Island Counseling has a team of ADHD specialists that are available to help with ADHD focused interventions. Services include:
- Classroom Review and Accommodations – We review what programs are currently in place and how they’re being implemented; for example, 504 plans, IEPs, functional behavior assessments, etc. We will also observe these programs in action and monitor their progress.
- Parent Coaching, Training, and Support – We provide sessions for parents and caregivers that focus on what ADHD children really need, what to expect, how the neurodivergent condition manifests, and what can be done both at home and at school. We’ll also talk about advocating for your child and making sure they’re given tools to manage school and home work.
- ADHD Coaching Sessions – We can provide ADHD coaching that focuses not only on a child’s general mental health, but also sustained student development. We’ll talk about setting and reaching goals, how to self-regulate, how to address challenges, and more. All of these are performed by experienced ADHD coaches.
For schools, we can also be a part of professional development for school staff and provide training and sessions in the classroom to help educators better understand ADHD and executive dysfunction.
