DBT on Long Island with the Therapists at LICS

Learn to Better Manage Emotions, Understand Others, and Change Your Life for the Better with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy from Long Island Counseling Services

Different people require different types of treatment in order to manage their mental health effectively. We are all unique human beings, which means that the approach that works for one person may not work for someone else. For patients with specific personality disorders, emotional dysregulation, eating disorders, and more, one type of therapy we may consider is known as Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT.

If you are looking for DBT on Long Island, or you’d like to schedule a consultation to see what type of therapy is best for you, please contact Long Island Counseling Services today. We have offices in East Meadow, NY and Melville, NY for your convenience.

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that is based off many of the same principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is considered by many to be one of the best and most successful form of psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, and many other mental health challenges.

But CBT specifically focuses on cognitions (thoughts) and behaviors. DBT, on the other hand, is focused on emotions. It’s focused on how a person feels, how intense the emotions are, whether they are able to hold two different emotions at the same time, and more. While DBT is not appropriate for all different types of mental health challenges, its success as an approach makes it one of the only effective ways to treat some personality disorders, as well as an effective way to treat:

  • Eating Disorders
  • Trauma
  • Anxiety
  • Substance Use
  • Suicidality
  • Depression, and More

DBT is also skills focused, which means we talk less about your experiences and past, and focus more on helping you develop skills that are designed to assist you with some of the challenges that you may face at different points in your life. It teaches skills that include:

  • Distress Tolerance
  • Emotional Control/Management
  • Situational Acceptance
  • Mindfulness
  • Empathy, and More

The skills taught within dialectical behavior therapy not only help to address mental health issues, but can also provide better relationships and a clarity that helps DBT patients in other areas of life as well.
