What is CBT and CBT Therapy?
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a heavily researched, validated approach to therapy used worldwide. It differs from other forms of therapy in that it is designed to be faster, more goal-oriented, and focused less on your past experiences and more on your current thoughts and behaviors.
CBT focuses on two components of mental health disorders:
- Cognitions – Cognitions are the way that we process thoughts, the negative thought patterns that we create, and the types of thoughts that affect our mental health. Examples include irrational worries, negative self-talk, and hopelessness.
- Behaviors – Behaviors are the way that we respond to these thoughts and the mental health challenges we struggle with. Often our behaviors have an effect on our ability to manage and recover from these mental health conditions, and changing behaviors can improve our quality of life.
Therapy with CBT may integrate many different techniques, including exposure therapy and cognitive restructuring depending on the way your mental health issues present themselves. It is also a broad therapy that works for many conditions, including:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Addiction
- Trauma and PTSD
- Grief
- Eating Disorders, and More
However, it should be noted that while CBT is a fantastic choice, it is also not right for everyone. That is why it is so important to speak to a therapist that you trust, so that you both, together, can determine the best strategy for addressing your mental health concerns.
