Therapy and Couples Counseling for Infertility, Miscarriages, and Other Trouble Conceiving
The choice to have a child is a major decision – one with the potential to be life altering. It is also one that may be filled with a lot of hope or excitement. But the path towards having a child is also not an easy one, or one that is guaranteed. When a couple struggles with infertility, that hope can turn into a range of negative emotions that make it harder to move forward with your next steps.
Therapy for infertility is designed to address infertility itself, and the emotions that you may be feeling both before and as a result of the struggle to conceive. We can also provide this type of therapy for couples, especially if there are issues that are affecting your marriage or partnership. At Long Island Counseling Services, our therapists are available to talk to you about your fears, stresses, anxiety, depression, and any emotions that you feel as a result of this journey. Why Consider Therapy for Infertility?
Infertility – as defined by the ability to conceive a child after one year of actively trying – is as natural as any other biological function. While there is often this belief that fertility is normal and common, at least 1 in 7 couples will struggle with infertility, and there are some reasons to believe that number may be an undercount, as couples now tend to marry over the age of 30, which has an infertility rate of anywhere from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4 (25%).
But we are often taught that fertility is a sign of virility and youth, and that the inability to get pregnant may reflect something on ourselves, our relationships, or our future. Couples that feel stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues related to infertility may find that they benefit from therapy. That is because therapy can provide:
- Anxiety and Depression Treatment – If your struggles getting pregnant are causing you anxiety, depression, or immense stress, therapy can help you learn to overcome those emotions and think more positively about the future.
- Couples-Related Issues – Infertility can often put stress on couples, and since most of our therapists are also couples counselors, this makes it possible for us to help both of you adjust to these new thoughts and stresses, remain intimate, and make decisions as partners.
- Future Planning – Some couples that struggle with infertility may still get pregnant in the future (known as subfertility), while others may be permanently infertile. We can talk to you about navigating those questions, addressing stresses about the future, and helping you figure out how to move forward.
There is also some evidence that the stress of worrying about fertility can make it more difficult to get pregnant. Therapy can make sure that you have a plan for your mental health and life transitions no matter what the future holds.
