Comprehensive Therapy for Individuals, Couples, and Families
At Long Island Counseling, we provide therapy that is both evidence-based and deeply personal. Our therapists are trained in a wide range of treatment modalities to meet the needs of each client – whether you are seeking support for anxiety, trauma, depression, relationship struggles, or personal growth.
Every client’s situation is unique. That’s why we integrate multiple approaches, tailoring each session to your goals, background, and comfort level. We believe that therapy works best when it adapts to the individual, not the other way around.
Our practice serves clients throughout Long Island, offering in-person and virtual sessions for children, individuals, couples, and families.

We go into more detail on some of these modalities below, but please feel free and reach out if you have questions or would like to inquire about something specific.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most researched and widely practiced forms of therapy. It focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns that influence emotions and behavior. By learning how to challenge negative thoughts and replace them with more balanced perspectives, clients gain practical tools for managing anxiety, depression, stress, and self-esteem issues.
CBT is structured, goal-oriented, and effective for individuals who want strategies that can be applied outside of therapy in daily life.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) builds on CBT principles but adds mindfulness and emotional regulation techniques. It is particularly useful for individuals who experience intense emotions, difficulty managing relationships, or patterns of self-destructive behavior.
DBT teaches four main skill areas – mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness – helping clients respond to stress in healthier, more adaptive ways.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps clients develop psychological flexibility by learning how to accept difficult thoughts and emotions rather than trying to eliminate them. ACT combines mindfulness, values clarification, and behavior change strategies to help clients live more authentically and intentionally.
This approach is especially helpful for anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and transitions where control feels limited.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate and nonjudgmental therapy model that views the mind as made up of different “parts” or subpersonalities. These parts often carry burdens from past experiences and may create internal conflict.
IFS helps clients build a stronger connection to their “Self” – the calm, centered, and compassionate core within – so they can heal wounded parts and create greater internal harmony. It is an effective approach for trauma, self-criticism, and emotional regulation.
Trauma-Informed Care
Our trauma-informed approach ensures that every session prioritizes safety, trust, and empowerment. We recognize that trauma affects both the mind and body, and that healing requires sensitivity to each client’s emotional and physiological needs.
This approach is not limited to trauma-specific therapy; it informs all of our work, allowing clients to feel supported and respected at every stage of their healing process.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an evidence-based treatment designed to help clients process and resolve traumatic or distressing memories. Using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps the brain reprocess information so that past experiences lose their emotional intensity.
It is effective for trauma, anxiety, panic, and other conditions that involve intrusive memories or emotional triggers.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing awareness to the present moment without judgment. In therapy, mindfulness helps clients observe their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations with curiosity rather than resistance.
This approach can be integrated into many modalities and is particularly effective for stress reduction, anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation. Mindfulness encourages clarity, calm, and self-acceptance.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on understanding how past experiences, early relationships, and unconscious patterns influence your thoughts and behavior in the present. It offers insight into how long-standing emotional patterns developed and how they can be shifted.
This approach is less about symptom management and more about deep, lasting self-awareness – helping you understand not just what you feel, but why.
Marriage and Couples Counseling
Our marriage and couples counseling services help partners improve communication, rebuild trust, and deepen emotional connection. We use evidence-based approaches such as the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to identify patterns, resolve conflict, and strengthen intimacy.
Whether you’re addressing ongoing challenges, navigating major transitions, or seeking to reconnect, couples therapy provides the tools to grow together more intentionally.
Family Counseling
Family counseling helps families navigate communication challenges, conflict, and life changes that impact relationships at home. This modality focuses on understanding family dynamics and creating healthier patterns of interaction.
Therapy provides a safe, structured environment where each family member can be heard and supported, promoting better understanding and stronger connections.
Individual Counseling
Individual therapy provides a private, supportive space to work through anxiety, depression, stress, grief, trauma, or personal growth. Sessions are personalized to your needs, integrating multiple modalities as appropriate.
The goal of individual counseling is to help you gain insight, develop practical coping strategies, and create meaningful change – both internally and in your everyday life.
Therapy for Children
Child therapy at Long Island Counseling is designed to help children understand and express their emotions in healthy, age-appropriate ways. Children often struggle to articulate what they feel using words, so therapy uses structured approaches that help them communicate through play, creativity, and guided discussion. Our therapists create a safe, supportive environment where children can explore their experiences, build coping skills, and develop greater emotional awareness.
Depending on the child’s age, needs, and personality, therapy may incorporate several modalities, including:
- Play Therapy – Children often express thoughts and emotions more freely through play than conversation. Play therapy uses toys, art, and storytelling to help children work through conflict, anxiety, or trauma in a natural, non-threatening way.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – For older children and teens, CBT helps identify and replace negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, or behavioral challenges. It also provides practical coping strategies that can be used at home and school.
- Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation – Techniques such as deep breathing, grounding, and awareness exercises help children calm their bodies and better manage big emotions.
- Family-Inclusive Support – When helpful, parents and caregivers are included in the process to strengthen communication and consistency at home.
Child therapy can help with emotional and behavioral concerns such as anxiety, ADHD, trauma recovery, grief, and social or school-related challenges. Each session is adapted to the child’s developmental level, ensuring that therapy feels supportive, engaging, and empowering.
At Long Island Counseling, our goal is to help children build resilience, confidence, and self-understanding – skills that lay the foundation for lifelong emotional health.
