It’s hard to get over loss. That is why many people seek out grief counseling – to support those that need to talk to someone to overcome trauma and develop coping skills to get them to the next step in the recovery process.
Stacy Pellettieri of Long Island Counseling Services has been continuing her mental health podcast, Why Do People Do That, and recently sat down with someone that had to overcome an immense loss – the loss of a child.
Stacy and Heather sat down with Minister Elder Empress Armstead-Henderson to discuss the heartbreaking experience of losing a child and the process of trying to recover, pick up the pieces, find faith, and restore direction in your life.

One thing we’d like you to take away from this episode – and grief in general – is how complicated it all is. When we talk about “loss” casually, we discuss it like it is a straightforward emotion: sadness over the loss of someone close to you.
But typically, loss is so much more complex. Many people struggle with conflicting emotions, which is especially common when the person you’re mourning is a family member.
That is why we should not talk about or think about loss as though it is loss alone. We likely have to talk about trauma, family dynamics, relief, anger – all of the many, many emotions that occur when a person is experiencing grief.
